Debut Novel for Crime Novelist Nick Quantrill

Article posted by Darren E Laws | 01:02:2010

Hull born and based crime fiction author, Nick Quantrill new novel, Broken Dreams, is published by Caffeine Nights Publishing on March 15, 2010. The novel, a gritty urban tale of corruption, greed and murder, centres on the regeneration of Hull and is the first in a series of novels to feature private detective, Joe Geraghty.

The release of the novel is at a time when there is a burgeoning renaissance of crime writing from Hull, coupled with the 25th anniversary of the death of Phillip Larkin. Larkin lived the last 30 years of his life in Hull.

The theme of Quantrill’s novel doesn’t shy away from the problems faced by many neglected cities in the UK today, and features the effects of a city coming to terms with a loss of importance and identity following the wilful decimation of a once thriving fishing industry. Quantrill’s passion for this neglected part of East Yorkshire is evident in his writing and reminiscent of Ian Rankin’s love affair with Edinburgh.

This is Nick Quantrill’s debut novel but he writes with a seasoned hand and he has already built a reputation and following in his hometown. To coincide with the launch of the novel, Nick has been invited to ‘Crime and the City’ to sit alongside Allan Guthrie and Robert Edric to discuss how the energy of a city can influence writing, at the Larkin Centre, Hull University on the 16th March, a day after the publication of his novel.

Nick was a winner of the HarperCollins Crime Tour Competition in 2006 for his short story ‘Punishment’ before he went on to complete Broken Dreams.

Broken Dreams will be available as a paperback from all good bookstores and to download as an eBook and iPhone app. To see Nick talk about Broken Dreams and what inspires him as an author a series of videos will be available to download from www.youtube.com/CaffeineNightsFilms from February 22nd.

Broken Dreams is published by Caffeine Nights Publishing on 15 March 2010. Review copies of Broken Dreams are available from the publisher on request.

Nick is available for interview.

Synopsis - 'Broken Dreams' by Nick Quantrill

Joe Geraghty, Private Investigator, is used to struggling from one case to the next, barely making the rent on his small office in the Old Town of Hull. Invited by a local businessman to investigate a member of his staff’s absenteeism, it’s the kind of surveillance work that Geraghty and his small team have performed countless times. When Jennifer Murdoch is found bleeding to death in her bed, Geraghty quickly finds himself trapped in the middle of a police investigation which stretches back to the days when the city had a thriving fishing industry. As the woman’s tangled private life begins to unravel, the trail leads Geraghty to local gangster-turned-respectable businessman, Frank Salford, a man with a significant stake in the city’s regeneration plans. Still haunted by the death of his wife in a house fire, it seems the people with the answers Geraghty wants are the police and Salford, both of whom want his co-operation for their own ends. With everything at stake, some would go to any length to get what they want, Geraghty included.
